Is the " state of climatic emergency " a real response to the current crisis or merely a symbolic gesture? Here's a look back at this rapidly-growing trend which spread to many parliaments around the world.
Transcript
00:00It's amendment 11, it speaks about a climate emergency.
00:04This house must declare an environment and climate emergency.
00:09It is our political dignity to declare the state of ecological and climate emergency.
00:14An institutional declaration that declares Spain in a state of climate emergency.
00:30And the resolution is adopted.
01:00Woo! Let's go!
01:14The climate is in desperate need of our help.
01:23Our governments are lying to us about the state of the climate and ecological emergency.
01:28It's time for action.
01:29We are not here for this action.
01:31We are here to put the government under pressure.
01:34And what is a success for us is that the government declares a climate emergency
01:38and invites a citizens' assembly.
01:40These are our goals and we don't go until they are achieved.
01:44And we will come again and again until these goals are implemented.
02:28We can declare climate emergencies, but the people on the streets are not asking us for declarations.
02:40They are asking us for actions.
02:42And at the European level, unfortunately, and it's not your fault,
02:45but unfortunately, when we go to Madrid, the EU comes empty handed.
02:51We can't even say that the 2050 climate neutrality target will be embraced by the EU.
02:57For example, because the Czech Republic, a renewed prime minister, is not signing up to that.
03:03That needs to change instead of declarations.
03:27How will you address these concerns now that you've agreed that we face a climate emergency?
03:41When will you outline how you are going to meet their demands on immediate emission reductions
03:47and the setting up of a citizens' assembly?
03:50And do you accept that you now need to pull your finger out on this?
