Pet theft concerns: Should punishments be tougher?

With over 30,000 dogs stolen last year, we ask locals if they worry about pet theft and whether penalties for stealing animals should be made harsher.

00:00Oh yeah, hell yeah, I'm a massive animal man, love my dogs, always have done.

00:08But it's one of those things, if people can find a way of making money they will.

00:15And stealing pets, cats, dogs, it's a money making business at the end of the day.

00:21It should be, but the thing is with crime now, they've got nowhere to, it's not a major

00:27crime as is, you know, the shops now, unless there's violence with a certain amount of

00:35money, the police don't turn up.

00:37I say to them, claim it off the insurance, because they're short of police and these

00:42people know that they're short.

00:44So obviously certain breeds are targeted specifically, and it is a constant worry, you're having

00:49to kind of keep your eyes open all of the time, wherever you are, walking around.

00:53It's not safe just to sometimes walk around the street if you think somebody can pull

00:56up and take your dog, so you have to be very careful.
