00:00On this day, in space.
00:04On March 16th, 1966, the crewed Gemini 8 spacecraft became the first
00:08to dock with another spacecraft in space. NASA astronauts
00:12Neil Armstrong and David Scott launched into orbit on their Gemini spacecraft almost three hours
00:16after the uncrewed Agena target vehicle launched separately.
00:20After a six hour chase, the Gemini crew caught up with the Agena target vehicle and the two spacecraft
00:24successfully docked. Then the problems started. The joint spacecraft
00:28started to tumble out of control. Assuming the problem had to do with the Agena
00:32target vehicle, they decided to undock. But shedding the extra weight actually made
00:36the Gemini spacecraft spin even faster, and it was rotating at one revolution per
00:40second. This made the astronauts pretty dizzy, but they still managed to safely
00:44execute an emergency landing. And that's what happened on this day in space.
