06:22Not understanding the source material on a certain level the filmmakers appear to have a grasp of what minecraft

06:33The trailers work in several easter eggs and references poking fun at things about this world that admittedly don't make a ton of sense

06:46Buck chucking as ridiculous as some mechanics are minecraft is a surprisingly soothing even atmospheric

06:55This hasn't shined through in the movie's advertising mainly giving us flashbacks to adam sandler's pixels
07:01I've been waiting to do this since 1982 the film seems to be promoting a message about imagination
07:08Falling in line with the game where the possibilities in the game are truly boundless though
07:13The movie looks boxed in with a run-of-the-mill plot cliched characters and morals we've seen before
07:21Anything you can dream about here you can make the use of live action a wonderland where anything you can imagine is possible
07:29For all the cgi
07:31We have to give the filmmakers credit for constructing a lot of practical sets and props that capture the game's aesthetic
07:37We could totally see this inspiring a theme park attraction
07:41That said when you have jack black and jason momoa walking around these sets
07:46That's exactly what it feels like a new part coming to six flags
07:52Every actor looks out of place in this world, especially when you pair them with animated characters
07:58Minecraft is all about immersion and the presence of live actors kills the illusion given the game's simple
08:05Blocky nature the studio should have gone all in on animation like the super mario brothers movie
08:11Even then some of the animated characters here would have required redesigns. Oh my gosh. I'm so sorry
08:19Creepy animation the world of minecraft is for lack of a better word
08:24Cartoony being part live action a minecraft movie attempts to bring a sense of realism to this world
08:31It's not impossible to achieve a balance as seen in detective pikachu and the sonic the hedgehog movies, uh

08:40Unfortunately, the movie's sheep goats and other creatures look like sonic before his redesign right down to the uncomfortable teeth
08:51What the hell the cgi characters are still too cartoony for us to believe they're really interacting with the live actors
08:59Yet they're realistic to the point of being unpleasant to look at we can't say it's quite as bad as ugly
09:05Sonic or the abominations from tom hooper's cats, but these designs are bringing out the worst of both worlds

10:15But to us this is the template for what a minecraft movie should be rather than expand upon that template
10:21The actual minecraft movie seems to be building something safer and more generic. Hopefully we're proven wrong
