00:00On this day in space.
00:04On March 9, 1961, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 9.
00:08This mission was a test flight of the Vostok spacecraft,
00:11which would later carry the first cosmonauts into space.
00:14Inside the spacecraft was a mannequin named Ivan Ivanovich,
00:17a dog named Shurnushka, dozens of mice, some reptiles,
00:20and the first ever guinea pig to fly to space.
00:23The dummy and his gang of animals launched on a Vostok K carrier rocket
00:26from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
00:29All the animals made it back to Earth unharmed after completing one orbit around the Earth.
00:33Ivan Ivanovich was ejected from the capsule during re-entry
00:36and landed with his own parachute.
00:38And that's what happened on this day in space.
