00:00Just four days ago, this secluded town

00:02in the middle of nowhere looked like this.

00:08And because this town is located

00:10in the middle of the jungle in Guatemala,

00:12an area that experiences extreme tropical storms

00:15in the summer, many of these small houses

00:17cannot withstand these brutal conditions,

00:20forcing the residents to constantly rebuild their homes

00:22in order to protect their families.

00:26However, Guatemala City, a four-hour car ride away,

00:29is in stark contrast to this

00:31with its upmarket infrastructure and work opportunities,

00:34a gap we really wanna bridge.

00:39Once we found out about this community in Guatemala,

00:41we contacted Techo, an organization we worked with

00:44two years ago by rebuilding 10 houses

00:46in an impoverished community in Costa Rica

00:49to see how we could help save this remote town

00:51from being destroyed.

00:52And one week later, Darren arrived

00:54just outside Guatemala City.

00:56And despite its beautiful landscapes and rich culture,

00:59he soon experienced firsthand just how difficult it was

01:01to reach the small village of Chiziguan,

01:04as he had to charter a small plane to a nearby town

01:06and then still walk for miles

01:08through the thick jungle terrain.

01:12A daily practice for the locals

01:14just to generate minimal income.

01:16Upon his arrival, Darren met with Alberto,

01:18a father of eight children who provides for them

01:20along with his wife Maria,

01:22by traveling for hours every day to reach the nearest city

01:25to sell fabrics, where he only makes $2 per day,

01:28meaning that each one of his family has to live

01:30on roughly $1 per week.

01:33On top of this, the entire family of 10

01:35have to share a singular bedroom.

01:37The existing houses that these people are living in

01:40are very rudimentary.

01:41The floors are made out of dirt.

01:43There's no electricity.

01:44They have to build fires inside of the houses

01:47to cook and keep warm.

01:48And on top of that, there's no way for Alberto

01:50and the rest of the community

01:51to collect fresh drinking water.

02:03It is absolutely heartbreaking to witness

02:05just how difficult it is for these people

02:07to support their families.

02:09We want to come and help this community.

02:10We want to make a big difference for them.

02:13We want to give them a more comfortable

02:14and safe environment to raise their families.

02:17And so we have got a big plan for all of the work

02:19that we are going to do over the next few days

02:21with our partner, Techo.

02:22So in just four days, we will be constructing

02:2515 new homes that will have solar panels

02:27to provide basic electricity, a sanitation system,

02:30concrete flooring, a wood-burning stove,

02:33and a rain harvesting system with storage infiltration.

02:36In Techo, there are almost 1.5 million volunteers

02:40who have passed through the organization.

02:42These kinds of activities can change their lives

02:44by allowing them to connect with their traditional roots

02:47and support these small communities.

02:49They help by bridging the gap

02:50between those less fortunate than themselves.

02:56Early the next morning, with only four days

02:59to pull off the enormous feed,

03:00over 50 volunteers from Techo had arrived in the village

03:03to start the construction.

03:05And with the lack of roads in this village,

03:07Darren and the volunteers had to carry all of the building

03:09equipment to the top of the hill,

03:11where the new homes are being built,

03:12so the next 48 hours are going to be extremely tough.

03:31With two days down, they were able to finish the structures of the houses.

03:35However, with only 48 hours remaining,

03:37they still had to install all of the irrigation pipes

03:39and plumbing for the water collection system.

03:41They'll be able to accumulate a lot of water over here

03:43so that they've got adequate water available when it doesn't rain.

03:48This is a huge upgrade for them.

03:48I've never doubted Darren's abilities before,

03:50but this one was touch-and-go.

03:51I can't believe it.

03:52But they finished just in time before the sun rose

03:54to surprise Alberto and all the other families

03:56with their new homes.

03:57And the children couldn't contain their excitement.

04:10A lot of water over here so that they've got adequate water

04:12available when it doesn't rain.

04:21immediately see how excited this community was the expressions in their faces the excitement in

04:27their voices and it was a beautiful experience the gratitude that they were giving us back felt

04:32to me like more than we were giving them they now will have more opportunities to make significantly

04:37more money as they would have to spend less time maintaining their houses every storm the new roads

04:42techo built will make it easier to travel to and from neighboring communities they have electricity

04:48making it easier for the children to study at night the new stoves make it easier to cook healthy

04:52food and this will allow the community to expand and one day become a fully functional town with

04:57similar opportunities to those that live closer to the city so alberto and his family will never

05:02have to hike those treacherous paths again and beyond this we have another big surprise for the
