Competition, cooperation in space

While nations compete in space, there is also significant collaboration, says Kevin O’Connell, Trump’s former Director of Space Commerce.

00:00On that note, at a global level, how much is there collaboration versus competition?

00:06I think there's both actually.

00:08We talk about ourselves being in a race with the Chinese at this point.

00:12It's interesting to see how China has come along in the last few decades very, very aggressively.

00:21There's a tremendous amount of competition, but there's also cooperation.

00:26In the first Trump administration, we had the initiation of the Artemis Accords.

00:30That's 50 nations that have actually committed to going back to the moon permanently and

00:35sustainably.

00:36We'll see how that's adjusted in the second Trump administration.

00:41When we go to the moon or we go to space, we don't just go with the things that we have.

00:47We bring our values to space.

00:49When you look at the Artemis Principles, those principles really are about how we intend

00:55to share data, to provide for safety of astronauts, and others.

00:59There's a lot of basis for cooperation.

01:01On the military side, there's also historically been, at least for the United States and what

01:05we call the Five Eyes countries, there's been tremendous cooperation in this area in addition

01:10to other partners.

01:13We just had the Japanese Prime Minister in Washington, and he and the President have

01:17actually reaffirmed pursuits in space together.
