Thutmose II’s tomb found in remote area

Pharaoh Thutmose II’s tomb was unexpectedly discovered in a very remote area, Egyptologist Dr. Chris Naunton says. #Egypt

00:00The team weren't expecting to find it where they actually found it.

00:05Can you tell us more about the location of the discovery

00:08and why it really did take them by surprise?

00:13Yeah, well, the reason is that this is a period of a few centuries,

00:17about five centuries, during which time the kings were buried

00:20in the very famous cemetery, the Valley of the Kings.

00:23So, you know, we might have expected to find this missing tomb,

00:28as it were, in the valley.

00:30And in actual fact, it's some two and a half kilometres away

00:34further into the desert.

00:36And the Valley of the Kings is already, you know,

00:38in a quite remote location, a long way away from the Nile Valley

00:41where people were living, up in the high desert.

00:44This is even further, even more remote.

00:47And up until this point, we were not aware that there was

00:51really very much out there at all.

00:54We knew of a few tombs, of some members of the royal family

00:57in some cases, but of no kings.

01:00So there was no sense up until this point that the tomb of a king

01:04ought to be there, and yet, you know, here it is, suddenly.

01:07This is part of the sensation of what's been found.
