French street artist Shuck One pays tribute to Black history at Pompidou Centre in Paris

An installation by French street artist Shuck One is honouring Black historical figures and key moments in France’s past as part of the 'Black Paris; exhibition at the Pompidou Centre.

00:00With this installation REGENERATION, I wanted to retrace the memory of black people who

00:27created the Paris Noir and who, in a way, are pioneers and pioneers who have led us

00:32in different fields, artistic, intellectual or other, and a way for me to honor them.

00:38I would also talk about the Black Atlantic, the Black Caraïbes, since these characters

00:42are both American and on the other side of things.

00:45And what was really important in this installation for me, it's the different components

00:50and the different artistic, intellectual and food stratifications in the archive

00:56to be able to compose this installation not only in archive, but also in painting and in volume.

01:02At the end of the 70s, with my grandparents in Pointe-à-Pitre, I discovered graffiti,

01:27this famous intellectual poet who formed a triangle with Senghor, Césaire and Gontrand Damas.

01:35And finally, when I arrived in Paris in 1984, I discovered graffiti in another form,

01:39artistic and vindictive.

01:41But the two things have given me the foundation of all this, and above all, the fundamental,

01:46as Gontrand Damas says, is that it allowed me to discover my history, America, the Caraïbes,

01:53slavery, colonization, departmentalization, then I would say South America.
