Ruth, the eighth book of the Bible, is a timeless story of faith, loyalty, and redemption set during the period of the Judges. Unlike the broader national struggles found in Judges, Ruth focuses on the personal journey of a Moabite woman whose unwavering devotion leads her into the lineage of Israelâs greatest king.
The book begins with tragedyâNaomi, an Israelite, loses her husband and sons while living in Moab. One of her widowed daughters-in-law, Ruth, refuses to abandon her, declaring, âWhither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my Godâ (Ruth 1:16). Ruthâs steadfast love and commitment lead her to Bethlehem, where she finds favor in the eyes of Boaz, a kind and righteous man who becomes her redeemer.
Ruth is more than a story of love and providenceâit is a profound testament to Godâs grace and inclusion of the outsider. Despite being a foreigner, Ruth is welcomed into the people of Israel and ultimately becomes the great-grandmother of King David, securing her place in the genealogy of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5).
