Soon, a ‘Robocop’ will issue fines to violators of rules set for electric scooters and bicycles in Dubai by using facial recognition and linking it with Emirates ID.

This was revealed when the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) began the trial phase of the smart robot in Jumeirah 3 beach area on Thursday.

00:00We will be starting from 3pm to 11pm during weekdays, and 5pm to 1am on weekends for the
00:2330 days.
00:24This is a trial period where we will be only doing a study of the AI detection to ensure
00:29the quality of the detection and information being monitored on an 8-hour basis during
00:38the operational time.
00:39There will be no fines at this point, we will not apply fines, however, the detection will
00:45be done for those violations for study purpose prior to the second phase launch if deemed
00:53successful.
00:54The robot features comprises of a camera that is monitored 24-7 with an AI base that will
01:01analyse that video imaging, and then based on the use cases it's trained for, it will
01:06automatically detect and only store, of course send to our servers where that violation will
01:13be only stored during that detection period.
01:18The other thing, there is also sensors for obstacle and movement and manoeuvring for
01:25safety purposes, around 1.5m motion sensor detector.
01:33The first trial period there will be no fine receiving, but later on we are looking at
01:38the facial recognition, maybe also looking at different technology by matching with other
01:45using eMERGE ID, APAS, so there are so many different technologies that this will be in
01:50the second phase study.
01:52After we confirm first the detection, accuracy, error rate lower for us to go to the next
02:00successful layer, because like you said, applying such a fine will cause complaints and maybe
02:07grievances, so to avoid having that much we want to make sure that first the data quality
02:13and accuracy is at high level before we move to the next levels.
