Seven hospitalised in QLD due to snake bites over the weekend

Queenslanders are being urged to remain vigilant after seven people were bitten by snakes over the weekend.

00:00A man in his 30s has suffered potentially life-threatening injuries after he was bitten

00:06by what's believed to be an eastern brown snake while he was mowing the lawn in the

00:11backyard of his Moray Field home just north of Brisbane yesterday afternoon.

00:16He was rushed to the Caboolture Hospital and he is one of seven Queenslanders who was taken

00:21to hospital because of snakebites just over the weekend.

00:24This follows a day last week where Queensland paramedics reported treating six snakebite

00:29victims in the space of 12 hours and paramedics are reporting a major spike in the number

00:34of cases they are seeing this summer right across the state.

00:38Experts say it's not uncommon to see an increase in snake activity at this time of year.

00:43The warmer weather and the combination of heavy rainfall does mean that snakes are more

00:48likely to be on the move but central Queensland, that region in particular, has recorded a

00:53worrying increase in the number of cases they are seeing and sadly one death.

00:58A teenager, a 16-year-old Bo Horan died after he was bitten on the leg by a snake in the

01:04backyard of his home near Gladstone in November.

01:07All of this is prompting a warning from authorities for people to be extra cautious when they

01:12are out and about in the bush or even around their yard.

01:16Snake catchers say if you do see a snake on your property it's always best to call the

01:20experts, do not approach it and they have recommended that people, if they are working

01:24in the yard, wear extra protection, so long pants, gloves and closed in shoes.
