00:06but Washington wants to see more effort from member states. Could you help us unpack that

00:12a little bit? What's he getting at here, do you think? You know, it was an important statement

00:16because it disproved what Trump's critics had been saying, that he was going to pull out of NATO.

00:21What Hegseth said is that Trump stands solidly with NATO, but he wants European states to take

00:29primary responsibility for the defense of continental Europe, and to take responsibility,

00:34primary responsibility, for providing lethal and non-lethal aid to Ukraine because this is a

00:40European conflict. And the reason he said this is because he said the U.S. has global security

00:46challenges to deal with, and President Trump plans to prioritize the threat from China,

00:51which means we have to have a division of labor between Europe and the United States to deal with

00:56this global crisis, and Europe has to take control of European security.
