00:00It's easy for our thoughts to be consumed by the spread of the virus and the risk to
00:05our health of our loved ones and ourselves. Its impact on the wider economy is also a
00:14worry for many.
00:18So how do we maintain our mental and our physical health during this unprecedented and critical
00:25time?
00:32In a nutshell, I think we all need to manage our expectations. Unfortunately, this lockdown
00:41isn't going to be the retreat of our dreams and the notion that extended quarantine may
00:49bring new and unprecedented productivity is also likely to be wider the mark.
00:59At least to begin with, do not underestimate the additional mental and emotional load that
01:06this pandemic brings or the impact it will have on us and our productivity, at least
01:14in the short term. Difficulty concentrating, low motivation and a state of distraction
01:21are to be expected. So I implore you to please, please go easy on yourself.
01:29As we settle into this new rhythm of remote working and isolation, we need to be realistic
01:38about the goals we are setting. Instead, focus on what we can influence, what can
01:47we change and perhaps most importantly, what we can learn.
01:54Now here is my simple six, my golden rules.
01:58Number one, maintain a routine and this will help keep your mind focused and sharp. It
02:05also helps to normalise your day.
02:08Number two, keep up the contact. This is 2020 and we all have the tools at our fingertips
02:17to keep in touch with loved ones, colleagues and friends, old and new. Regular contact
02:25and shared experiences are so important.
02:29Number three, get some sleep. This is probably one of the few times where we can get the
02:37sleep we need. Use it. Furthermore, it will boost your immune system.
02:44Four, exercise. Keep doing it. Start doing it.
02:50Number five, be informed, not overwhelmed. Knowing what's going on is important. Knowing
02:58what's going on 24 hours a day from multiple sources will only serve to wear you down.
03:06Six, follow the rules. We need to trust the experts. We are all links in a chain and one
03:16break and the chain fails. Finally, this will pass and it will become history, not the here
03:27and now. But what do we learn from it? Well, that's up to us. Stay safe and thank you.
