00:00Good day. Welcome to the Gulf News update for Thursday, July 28. Here are the top stories
00:06at this hour.
00:08The Syrian army has said it has cut off all supply routes into eastern Aleppo. The government
00:13airdropped thousands of leaflets there, asking residents to cooperate with the army and calling
00:18on fighters to surrender. Concern for those trapped in the rebel-held part of Aleppo is
00:22rising as 250,000 people are now effectively under siege.
00:28With his own legacy on the line, President Barack Obama implored Americans to elect Hillary
00:32Clinton to the White House, casting her as a candidate who believes in the optimism that
00:37drives the nation's democracy. He warned against the deeply pessimistic vision of Republican
00:41Donald Trump. For Democrats, the night was steeped in symbolism, the passing of the baton
00:46from a barrier-breaking president to a candidate trying to make history herself.
00:51Chancellor Angela Merkel interrupted her vacation to face down accusations at home and abroad
00:57that her open-door refugee policy allowed terrorism to take hold in Germany. Merkel
01:01returns to Berlin to hold a news conference after a spate of attacks since July 18 left
01:0615 people dead, including four attackers and dozens injured. To assailants, a Syrian asylum
01:12seeker and a refugee from either Pakistan or Afghanistan had links to Islamist militancy,
01:18officials say.
01:19A much-depleted Russian team has departed for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, missing
01:24dozens of athletes who were excluded amid the country's doping scandal. More than 100
01:29athletes from what was originally a 387-strong team have been barred from competing in Rio
01:35by international sports federations under sanctions which most Russian athletes consider
01:40unfair.
01:41And finally, the weather. Today's high across the UAE will be 42 degrees Celsius, dropping
01:46to 32 degrees at night.
01:48That's all for now. Thanks for watching. A reminder that our next bulletin will be on
01:51Sunday. But as always, you can get the latest news on gulfnews.com
