00:26An armed assailant was holding an unknown number of hostages in a central Sydney cafe

00:31on Monday, shutting down Australia's largest city.

00:35Six hours after the mid-morning siege began, television showed five hostages running out

00:41of the Lindt Chocolate Cafe and sheltering behind a heavily armed SWAT team.

00:46Police said it was not known exactly how many more hostages remained in the cafe, but it

00:52was not as high as the 30 or 40 that had been reported earlier.

00:56The remaining hostages were being held by at least one armed assailant, police said,

01:02but did not rule out that others could be involved.

01:06A carbon-curbing deal struck in Lima on Sunday was a watered-down compromise where national
