US President Donald Trump bypasses NATO, choosing not to consult the alliance on key decisions, former US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Matthew Bryza says.

00:08how much you think President Trump is running things by NATO, NATO allies

00:13before and after conversations with the other key player in all of this,

00:18President Putin. Yeah that Tom is the key question and at me as a you know I grew

00:24up as a Cold Warrior, my whole Foreign Service career was in it and you know

00:27for all of us of my generation, NATO was at the center of everything and we would

00:31coordinate every major national security initiative abroad with our NATO allies.

00:36I don't think Trump, that's certainly not his instinct, I mean he questioned

00:40whether or not NATO was obsolete as you'll recall in his first term and as

00:44we see in the way he handled the Gaza Riviera proposal with Prime Minister of

00:49Israel Netanyahu sitting next to him, he completely blindsided Netanyahu when

00:53he Trump made that amazing announcement. So I think in the case of NATO

00:56there's not nearly as much cooperation by Trump as there would otherwise be.
