DHS Asks Treasury to Deputize IRS Agents for Immigration Enforcement

The Department of Homeland Security has requested that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent deputize law enforcement officers, including IRS criminal investigators, to assist in immigration enforcement. In a Feb. 7 memo, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem asked Bessent to provide agents to help investigate financial networks tied to human trafficking and businesses employing illegal immigrants. These agents could also arrest, detain, and transport individuals. A prior memo granted similar authority to the Justice Department, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Marshals Service, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) division has 2,290 special agents.
