00:00Normally the drive from Dubai to Fujairah takes about 90 minutes. It's a treacherous

00:11drive through the mountains, through the Friday market, through many twists and turns, and

00:17very often you come across heavy trucks. It just makes for a nasty drive. This weekend,

00:25to celebrate National Day, the government opened a new road between Dubai and Fujairah.

00:36It's supposed to take 45 minutes. I'm on my way to Sharjah now to see exactly what the

00:44road is like, so come along for the ride. So we've left Sharjah, I'm heading south-east

00:52on Maliha Road. I can see the mountains of Fujairah ahead of me. The only problem is

00:57that there's no signpost for this new road that links Dubai and Fujairah. There's just

01:04no sign of it. Right now I'm following my nose, I'm following the GPS, and as it stands

01:13right now, I haven't found a new road. So this beautiful sedge of new asphalt marks

01:20the beginning of the highway between Khor Fakkan and Fujairah. Highway 84, they opened

01:32last week, and judging by the amount of traffic on it, obviously we've all found it. So we're

01:40climbing quite a bit, my ears have started to pop. You can see here on the left where

01:46they've cut out basically a whole mountainside where we're cutting through. It really is

01:52a spectacular piece of engineering, the bright limestone is exposed from where they've drilled

01:58out. We're pretty much at the crest of the hill. On this side it's Fujairah, and as I

02:07pan around, on this side of Yudh mountain cut, it's Dubai's side. The road officially

02:14opened on Saturday, but not all of the road works are complete. They're still doing some

02:21side works, some drainage works, the occasional crew are working, but by and large it's very

02:28very open, very very smooth, and a marvellous drive altogether. And here we are on the outskirts

02:36of Fujairah. Very quick, comfortable drive. Ten times better than the old road.
