Apprenticeships are now leading to higher earnings than some university degrees. How do you think hands-on experience compares to academic study in preparing people for work?

00:00How do you think, kind of, the hands-on experience compares to the academic study?

00:05Well, I mean, I teach at university part-time, so I suppose I've got first-hand experience

00:12of this. I think apprentices are a great idea. University isn't for everyone. You're not

00:17going to be in debt. And although it's awful to say it, the more people that go to university,

00:22it brings down the value of a degree, you know, unfortunately. I think that's a great

00:27idea.

00:28Is it a good experience, giving people hands-on experience, or do you think they should go

00:31and do a degree, perhaps?

00:33No, I definitely think that apprenticeships are great. I mean, I nearly would have gone

00:37into stuff if I didn't choose academics. There's so many paths, and so many of the jobs that

00:42I'm looking for have their own version of apprenticeships. Like, I mean, even looking

00:46in, like, finance and tech and stuff, all of those companies are offering apprenticeships.

00:52A lot of people, if you care about the next generation, hands-on, teaching them on the

00:58job, absolutely.
