00:00An economist said the one-size-fits-all policies drawn up for Bumi Putras in both Peninsular

00:07and East Malaysia have failed to close the economic gap between the two.

00:12Madeline Burma of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia said, programs that Putrajaya previously

00:18implemented had limited input from Sabah and Sarawak, which has had a detrimental effect

00:24on the economy of both states.

00:27She said this is because the Bumi Putra communities in these states are diverse and face different

00:33socio-economic realities.

00:36Madeline also said that despite the successful implementation of various development policies

00:42in the past, such as the National Vision 2020 policy, the gap between rural and urban areas

00:48in Malaysia is widening.

00:51Meanwhile Awang Azman Pawi of University Malaya called for a new economic policy to be drawn

00:57up for Bumi Putras of Sabah and Sarawak.

01:00Earlier this week, World Bank senior economist Rewin Salwa Purnama Sari said the economic

01:06security of the Bumi Putras has grown rapidly over the past two decades, although this progress

01:12has not been felt equally in East Malaysia.
