00:00Kala Sofia Gaston has responded to the backlash surrounding resurfaced social media posts that sparked controversy.

00:07The Spanish actor, known for her role in Amelia Perez, issued a public apology on Instagram,

00:13saying she regrets hurting people and hopes the film is appreciated for its message.

00:18Alongside a statement, she shared a picture from the Cannes Film Festival,

00:22where she stood with her co-stars Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, including director Jaqua Adiar, and others.

00:52I sincerely apologize to everyone who has been hurt along the way," she wrote in her post.

00:57Statement follows recent comments by Amelia Perez director Jaqua Adiar,

01:02who spoke about the controversy in an interview with Deadline,

01:05in which it described Kala's past remarks as inexcusable

01:09and revealed that he had not been in contact with her since the controversy started.

01:14She is in a self-destructive approach that I can't interfere in,

01:18and I really don't understand why she is continuing," said Jaqua.

01:22He added that the situation has been difficult for the film's team, saying,

01:26she is harming people who were very close to her, including the cast and crew.

01:31Meanwhile, Amelia Perez continues to be a major contender in this year's awards season,

01:36leading the Oscar nominations with 13 nods,

01:40as the first openly transgender actor to be nominated in an acting category at the Oscars.

01:45While the controversy remains unresolved,

01:47she maintains that a silence will let the film speak for itself.
