00:00A lot of criticism for President Trump's comments.
00:03How have those been playing out in Washington today?
00:07Well, a lot of surprise here in Washington, of course, Leanne,
00:10because the White House had not telegraphed that Donald Trump was
00:14going to make that announcement.
00:15In the East Room of the White House,
00:17reporters were stunned when it was first articulated
00:20by the American president.
00:22And up on Capitol Hill, Democrats, of course,
00:24absolutely roundly condemning it.
00:27Senator Chris Coons of Delaware, an influential member
00:31of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee,
00:33said,
00:33You can report that I was speechless.
00:36He described the president's proposal as insane.
00:39He said, I can't think of a place on Earth
00:42that would welcome American troops less
00:45and where any positive outcome is less likely.
00:48There was withering criticism of the president's proposal
00:51from Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia, who, of course,
00:55was Hillary Clinton's running mate,
00:57a vice presidential candidate back in 2016.
01:00He said, it's never, ever going to happen.
01:03Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, the only Palestinian-American
01:06member of the House of Representatives,
01:08described the president's proposal as ethnic cleansing.
01:12And even some prominent Republicans
01:14are very sceptical about it.
01:15Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, again,
01:18a very influential figure on the Senate Foreign Relations
01:21Committee, where, of course, the Republicans are now
01:24in the majority, said that he sees complexities
01:27with the president's proposal.
01:29He describes it as problematic on many, many levels.
01:33But the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson,
01:37says he thinks it's interesting and he wants
01:38to hear more details about it.
01:40He is not the Republican leader in the House of Representatives
01:45shutting the door on the president's idea.
