00:09with Brussels over judicial independence, the EU Court of Justice ruled on Wednesday.

00:16In 2021, Poland was fined €1 million per day by the court after the European Commission

00:22sued its right-wing Law and Justice Party government over judicial reforms that violated

00:28EU law. The EU Court ruled in favour of the Commission and ordered Poland to suspend the

00:34disputed law. When Poland refused, the court fined it. The fine was cut in half after Poland

00:41made changes, but since it didn't pay, the EU withheld funds to recover the money. The

00:47Commission, which oversees the common budget and approves regular payments, has an offset

00:52mechanism that it can use when a member state refuses to pay the fines imposed.
