Werewolves (2024, Frank Grillo) (REVIEW) | Projector Shorts | Howlingly awful
Film Brain

Frank Grillo has to use his Purge skills to fight off a night of werewolves, in this horror-actioner that's very silly, but Film Brain doesn't think is fun.

Frank Grillo tries to survive the night when he's vastly outnumbered by lots of hungry werewolves.
00:06
A year prior, a supermoon unlocked a dormant gene that turned over a billion people into werewolves.
00:11
Now it's happening again and Frank Grillo and his scientists try to find a cure
00:15
while Grillo races across the city to try and help his brother's widow and her daughter.
00:20
That might be the goofiest, silliest premise of any movie in recent memory
00:25
and it sounds like it could be some proper B-movie fun
00:28
and under the direction of Stephen C. Miller who directed several of the infamous Bruce Willis
00:32
geezer teasers, it certainly has the B-movie part down, the fun part not so much.
00:38
Okay, let's be kind, the best parts of the film is the werewolf effects which are mostly
00:43
accomplished practically by special effects experts Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr
00:47
whose credits include AVP, Terminator, you name it.
00:52
And yeah, the werewolves do look like massive blokes in suits, because they are,
00:56
and the snouts are absolutely enormous,
00:58
but it's great to see some actual costumes in camera with some gnarly gore shots.
01:03
Honestly, the hero wolves that still have some human costumes or earrings like the punk werewolf
01:08
are probably the most enjoyment I got out of this.
01:11
Aliens meets The Purge sounds like a great combination,
01:14
but it has none of the characters of the former and none of the satire of the latter.
01:17
It's just witless and obnoxious.
01:20
Miller leans hard on a comic book aesthetic by bathing the frame with neon colours
01:24
like a Schumacher Batman movie,
01:26
and when you combine that with more lens flares than a J.J. Abrams flick,
01:29
it's a bit unpleasant to look at,
01:32
especially when whole sections take place under headache-inducing strobe lighting.
01:36
There's some nominal plot about developing a moonscreen,
01:40
but that gets completely forgotten about at some point,
01:43
and then it just becomes a constant barrage of loud,
01:46
frantically cut werewolf battles with characters making stupid decisions.
01:50
It's not even amusingly bad,
01:52
apart from some hilarious moments with characters in hazmat suits
01:55
with face displays like they're Iron Man for some reason.
01:59
It's just numbing and exhausting until it ends super abruptly,
02:03
presumably because they hacked off any epilogue so you can leave it open for a sequel.
02:07
Woof.
