00:00When you Google your name, the first thing...
00:02Oh, I know what you're going to say, yeah.
00:04...that comes up is,
00:05who does Ben Barnes play in Harry Potter?
00:07No, and I have found myself over the last 20 years
00:11Googling who does Ben Barnes play in Harry Potter
00:13because you wouldn't believe
00:15the amount of Harry Potter books I've signed
00:18or Gryffindor scarves I've been given as gifts.
00:25The amount of sort of fan fiction
00:27that I've been sort of drafted into
00:31very enthusiastically is incredible
00:33and this is something that's been going on...
00:36A long time.
00:37...not normally something I would have known about
00:39because I was never...
00:41When I had Twitter for a few brief years,
00:44I didn't pay a lot of attention to it
00:48because I didn't find it my favourite platform
00:52in terms of the balance of positivity
00:56versus negativity on there.
00:58Sure.
01:00But it's been going on for 20 years
01:03that people have been very sort of kindly saying
01:07that they would have liked me to have played
01:09a sort of young version of this serious black character
01:12in Harry Potter,
01:13but now it's been going on so long
01:14that I'm now the age of the actual character in the books.
01:19So, yes, it's an extraordinary thing
01:22that people still associate me with something
01:24that I've never been in.
01:25When it was first brought up,
01:26people would say,
01:27would you sign this?
01:28And I would say,
01:28but I'm not...
01:30I was in the Narnia movies,
01:31not these.
01:33And I was wondering who they were confusing me with,
01:35whereas now I understand
01:36that it was this group of Aaron Taylor-Johnson
01:39and Andrew Garfield and myself
01:40that they were just very keen to be these characters
01:43when they kind of came out.
01:44And, you know, I'm a massive Gary Oldman fan.
01:48Loved him in...
01:49I've loved him in everything
01:50from Rosencrantz and Guildenstern
01:52all the way through to Slow Horses
01:55and certainly in...
01:57You know, I love the Harry Potter books
01:59as much as the next person.
02:00So I find it very flattering.
02:03And yeah, it's...
02:04But it is quite weird to be kind of lauded
02:07for something that you never did.
02:09But have you ever spoken to Andrew Garfield
02:12or Aaron Taylor-Johnson about these rumors?
02:15I've never spoken...
02:16I've never spoken to them about it.
02:18No.
02:21I have kind of gotten to know both of them
02:24over the years a little bit,
02:25but never managed to talk to them about this.
02:31But certainly been a big fan
02:33of both of the work for a long time.
02:35I sometimes...
02:36You know, I've been to see Andrew
02:37in various plays that he's done.
02:39And we share the exact same birthday,
02:42actually, I think.
02:44But...
02:46And I've been to the gym with Aaron,
02:48which is a very humiliating experience.
02:51Why?
02:52Have you seen the man?
02:54He's chiseled from marble from Greek times.
02:59And I am chiseled from...
03:02I'm chiseled from, you know,
03:05sourdough toast.
03:07Okay, that's inaccurate.
03:10Wildly inaccurate, but okay.
03:13Comparatively, their perspective on everything.
03:15You know, I do go to the gym,
03:17but there's, you know, going to the gym
03:19and then whatever that, whatever he's doing.
03:21That's extraordinary, extraordinary behavior.
03:25And I also, of course, need to ask,
03:27have you ever talked to anyone official
03:29about the Harry Potter reboot?
03:30Because you are now old enough to play.
03:34That's true, I am.
03:35I would, I feel like it would be a disservice
03:38that the millions of people
03:43who've messaged me,
03:44it's probably 12 people,
03:45but it would be a disservice to say,
03:49it would be a disservice to them
03:50and all the years they put into it
03:51to say that if I, if they approach me about it,
03:53I would, I wouldn't want to be involved.
03:55But yeah, it's certainly, you know,
03:59they're books that I love.
04:00And at least half of my career
04:03has been based on, you know, books,
04:06you know, literary adaptations that I've loved.
04:09And that one, I've seen a reason
04:10why it would be any different,
04:11but I haven't spoken to anyone about it yet.
