After Seeing Jamie's Reaction To John's Fate In 'Yellowstone' Season 5, Part 2 I Can't Stop Thinking About Wes Bentley's Tragic Comments Regarding Their Relationship

In the first moments of "Yellowstone’s" long-awaited Season 5B premiere, it was revealed that John Dutton is dead. While it looks like a suicide, it’s heavily implied that it was a murder and that Jamie’s girlfriend-of-sorts, Sarah Atwood, is behind it, because the Dutton sibling inquired about it. So, with all that in mind, I couldn’t stop thinking about Jamie’s reaction to the news of his father's death and Wes Bentley’s tragic comments regarding how his character is impacted by John's opinions of him.

00:00One quote I wrote down when I was re-watching it was in episode 5, I believe, John says,

00:05I've got one child I miss, one child I pity, one child I regret, but that girl I envy.

00:10Which I thought was really interesting.

00:12And I was wondering how those, John's opinions of his kids,

00:16how does that impact Jamie, especially as we're going into 5B?

00:19I think John's opinions of, in particular, Jamie is,

00:24it's a big motivator in his life in the sense that he doesn't get any

00:27money from John and he's just desperately looking for it.

00:32And it's confusing for him because he's done everything asked of him,

00:36including change who he is as a fundamental human being.

00:40And so, you know, that fuels Jamie in every scene.

00:44Definitely.

00:45And something I'm really interested in about Jamie is,

00:48it feels like his loyalty is almost his downfall.

00:51Like he's loyal to a fault.

00:52And we see that in the last season with how Sarah is treating him.

00:56So I was wondering if you could talk to me a bit about why you think Jamie's that way

01:01and how it could, and if he'll ever break out of that cycle.

01:05That's a good question.

01:06And it's something I couldn't decide if this was,

01:10if his loyalty being his detriment, is that something just inside of him?

01:15Or is that a coping mechanism when you're, when you are being someone you're not,

01:20who you're not really, you're not really are,

01:21you're leaning on the people who are telling you who you are.

01:24And John's that person.

01:26And so, you know, I think he's lost without that.

01:30I don't think he really, you know, I don't think I've ever been able to find him outside of that.
