Set during the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics, the film follows an American Sports broadcasting team that quickly adapted from sports reporting to live coverage of the Israeli athletes taken hostage. Through this lens, "September 5" provides a fresh perspective on the live broadcast seen globally by an estimated one billion people at the time.   At the heart of the story is Geoff (John Magaro), a young and ambitious producer striving to prove himself to his boss, the legendary TV executive Roone Arledge (Peter Sarsgaard). Together with German interpreter Marianne (Leonie Benesch) and his mentor Marvin Bader (Ben Chaplin), Geoff unexpectedly takes the helm of the live coverage. As narratives shift, time ticks away, and conflicting rumors spread, with the hostages' lives hanging in the balance, Geoff grapples with tough decisions while confronting his own moral compass.

00:02What's the situation?

00:04The police are reporting that armed terrorists have attacked the Israeli athletes.

00:08September 5 is the true story of a sports television crew

00:12that had to make the switch from sports to news on that day.

00:16This is our story, and we're keeping it.

00:18We wanted to have a very unique casting.

00:21The cast is extraordinary.

00:23Really one of the main things that attracted me to doing the film

00:25was the opportunity to be in a genuine ensemble.

00:28We had an amazing cast to play it as authentic and as honest as possible.

00:33Whenever Tim said, action, there was an electricity in the room,

00:37and I felt like I got to learn something from everyone.

00:40We're making broadcast history.

00:42More people have seen this than watched Armstrong land on the moon.

00:45We have Blue Knowledge, played by Peter Sarsgaard, the head of ABC Sports.

00:50Peter is curious, and he really pushes each actor to rise to the next level.

00:57What do you mean?

00:58I mean, can we show someone being shot on live television?

01:01John Magaro plays Jeffrey Mason,

01:03who is just the kid who was on the night desk when the shots were fired

01:07and the decision started having to be made.

01:09John captured that energy that Jeffrey Mason had.

01:12The real-life Jeffrey Mason was wonderful in getting me access to sports broadcast rooms,

01:18and I really learned what it takes to operate a live broadcast.

01:23If they shoot someone on live television, whose story is that?

01:27Marvin Bader was a moral compass, portrayed perfectly, I think, by Ben Chaplin.

01:32Ben, he's very detailed, and I think he captured that in his performance.

01:37It's just very rich work.

01:39Anything on the hostages yet?

01:41Only mixed information.

01:42Then we have the translator, Mariana Gephardt, played by Leonie Benesch,

01:46and she was always 100% in the moment.

01:50These are just local cops doing things they have never done before.

01:56It's a tremendous group of actors.

01:58When there's electricity in an ensemble, that collaborative energy, it's just, you know, it's gold.
