00:00Heavy snowfall brought chaos across large swathes of the UK over the weekend
00:05and the disruptions continued into this week over on public transport services
00:09and flood warnings in place. Liverpool John Lennon Airport runway was
00:14temporarily closed on Sunday morning and officially reopened around 1 p.m.
00:18Flights were delayed throughout the day and into the early hours of Monday
00:22morning and despite the airport being open as normal passengers are being
00:25warned of further disruption. On the Mersey rail network due to flooding 30
00:30minute rail services have been running between Hooton and Liverpool.
00:33Additionally due to flooding at Versailles train services to Hebbalt
00:37Lane were cancelled and delayed plus a points failure at Hunts Cross also
00:41caused disruption to services. A number of roads have been affected by flooding
00:45across Wirral following rain snow and sleet. Across Merseyside the M56 and M53
00:50have been affected and roads across the region have had to close. This follows
00:54snow and ice amber warnings over the weekend followed by a yellow warning on
00:59Monday morning. Liverpool Council said its gritting teams have been working
01:02around the clock to keep our roads safe by using 225 tons of grit with crews
01:08spreading another 20 tons by hand plus 175 street grit bins have been filled.
01:14Icy stretches are expected to develop due to ongoing wet surfaces following
01:18earlier rain and in places snow melts. Liverpool Council's urgent drivers to
01:23take extra precautions this winter as adverse weather conditions can
01:26significantly increase the risk of road traffic collisions. According to the
01:30Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents in 2023 21 people were killed
01:36382 were seriously injured and over a thousand were slightly injured in
01:41reported road traffic collisions on Britain's roads when there was rain snow
01:45sleet or fog. The Met Office says further wintry showers and icy stretches are
01:49expected across Merseyside with temperatures dropping as low as minus
01:53three degrees Celsius. Tuesday sees a mix of rain, sleet, snow and hail but
01:57Wednesday and Thursday will most likely be dry.
