Lifesavers urge Aussies to stay safe while braving the heat at pools, rivers and beaches

It was a sweltering summer weekend across the state, with many heading to the closest pool, river or beach to beat the heat.  Lifesavers have been kept incredibly busy on the waterways and are urging people to stay safe while they have fun.

00:05It's amazing.

00:07But with the heat comes the crowds,

00:10stretching Lifesavers to their limits.

00:12Since the school holidays commenced,

00:14there's been over three million people

00:16visiting the NSW coastline,

00:18and that's up almost a million on last year.

00:21In NSW, there were more than 30 rescues yesterday.

00:25In Victoria, Lifesavers pulled over 140 people

00:29from the water.

00:31Most had been caught in rips.

00:33In my 20 years-plus with this organisation,

00:35I don't remember a day where in Victoria

00:37we've performed that many rescues in a single day.

00:40Melbourne reached the peak of its heatwave today.

00:43Some suburbs topped 40 degrees.

00:46Oh, my God, it's so hot.

00:48Don't know if I'm going to have icy-cold ice cream.

00:51The intense heat will shift up to NSW on Monday.

00:55Pond Eye has been packed,

00:57and the temperature is set to soar even higher

00:59in Sydney's west tomorrow.

01:01Temperatures are expected to reach 39 in Penrith,

01:0437 in Parramatta.

01:08We're expecting that cool change

01:10to bring a fairly gusty southerly change

01:12to the south coast on Monday afternoon.

01:14It should reach Sydney in the evening,

01:16probably around 9pm.

01:18Bringing much-needed refreshment after a stifling few days.
