00:00A large metallic object crashed into Kenya's Makuku village on Tuesday. Officials believe

00:07it is space junk from a rocket's launch vehicle. The item weighs over 1,000 pounds and measures

00:13about eight feet in diameter. The Kenya Space Agency, or KSA, assessed the debris in the

00:18crash site in Makweni County. Here's KSA officer Major Alois Weir.

00:24It is a part of a space object which is in form of a ring, a metallic ring, possibly

00:33from a rocket separation stage. Officers retrieved fragments from the site

00:38for further analysis and to investigate the origin of the fallen object.

00:43We are to assess the impact to the area, identify whose space object it is, so that we can use

00:51the existing legal mechanisms under international law as far as the outer space treaty is concerned

00:59to look and to find a way to first get the person and bring him to the responsibility

01:09of his space object. The KSA said the debris does not pose an immediate

01:13threat to safety. There were no casualties and no significant damage was reported.

01:18There's growing concern around increased global space activities and the rise of man-made

01:23objects in the Earth's orbit. That's led experts and governments to highlight

01:28the potential risks associated with space junk, including incidents like this one when

01:33debris falls back to Earth.
