Synopsis : A New York, en 2022, les ressources naturelles sont épuisées. La situation est d'autant plus dramatique que la surpopulation, dans la métropole, est impossible à endiguer. Partout règnent la misère et la famine. Les quarante millions de New-Yorkais subsistent principalement grâce aux nourritures synthétiques fabriquées par la compagnie Soylent. L'inspecteur Thorn, encore privilégié, partage un minuscule appartement avec Sol Roth, un vieillard. Il enquête sur le meurtre de William Simonson, un ancien directeur de Soylent. Thorn découvre au fil de ses recherches que cette affaire est loin de se résumer à un simple crime sordide. Il reçoit des menaces, mais refuse d'abandonner l'enquête....
