00:00Former Prime Minister Najib Razak may turn out to be the unifying factor for three Malay-based

00:06parties currently at odds with each other, an analyst said.

00:11Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said a shared belief that Najib be placed under house arrest

00:16might pave the way for PAS, UMNO and BERSATU to work together during or after the next

00:21general election.

00:23He said an alliance may present a win-win outcome as PAS and BERSATU need UMNO's clout

00:28to expand their voter base, while UMNO would be willing to work with the two parties to

00:32strengthen its position among Malay voters.

00:35Syed Arabi Idid of the International Islamic University Malaysia believes the opposition

00:39party's rally on January 6th may be part of its strategy to put pressure on the government.

00:45However, he said an alliance could be short-lived given their history of only uniting against

00:50common adversaries like DAP or Pakatan Harapan, adding that their differences would resurface

00:55once the immediate threat is gone.

00:57Meanwhile, James Chin of the University of Tasmania questioned why PAS was championing

01:02Najib's cause given that he was previously an enemy of the party and also questioned

01:07whether there was something else going on behind the scenes.

01:10The rally is being held on the day the Court of Appeal will hear his application for leave

01:15to adduce fresh evidence in his appeal to serve the remainder of his jail term under

01:19house arrest, an order which he claims was issued in a supplementary decree to the February

01:242nd announcement.
