Dating proves difficult on Lord Howe Island with a small population

If you live in a remote community, finding a partner is often hampered by a lack of options. Hannah Ross has been speaking to residents of Lord Howe Island, which sits 600km off the NSW coast.

00:00Dating here on Lord Howe Island is a numbers game.

00:06The remote community has a permanent population of 400 people, so if you're in your 20s and

00:12looking for love, there's around 30 people in your age group.

00:16For single Islanders, it's a bit of a challenge.

00:18Single when I came.

00:20Still single.

00:21Still single.

00:22Yeah.

00:23It's hard, actually.

00:24Yeah, we're a small community, and there's more girls than boys here on the island.

00:28So it's like an 80-20 ratio, so it's hard.

00:31You don't want to cut the grass with your friends.

00:34Because there's not many places where to go here, and if you go for dinner, so you decide

00:40to date this guy, and you go for dinner, you want to find your neighbor there, or your

00:47workmate, or always somebody that you know.

00:50The next day, the whole island knows that you're dating.

00:53If you're a single person, you come here with the expectation that you're going to either

00:56meet someone, or you're here just living a casual life, with people coming in, going,

01:03and just have a good time.

01:05Local-wise, it's hard because I've known them all my life.

01:08They're like my brothers and sisters, so in that scheme, I don't really tend to date locals.

01:13There's plenty of fish on the mainland, but here, there's only skim fish.

01:18Would you like to find love out here?

01:19Maybe even stay?

01:20Yeah, totally.

01:21I'm coming back next season, and I really hope I find my person.

01:25Yeah.

01:26Because there's so many love stories that have come out of the island.
