00:00TV personality Michelle Visage has no plans to create New Year's resolutions.
00:04She does something more powerful instead.
00:07And science says you should, too.
00:09Visage, best known for her role as a judge on the reality competition show RuPaul's
00:13Drag Race, recently shared her unique take on New Year's resolutions during an exclusive
00:18interview with The Standard.
00:20The 56-year-old singer told The Standard,
00:22"'I think resolutions are a setup to failure, so I have goals rather than resolutions.
00:27Every year, I start out with always prioritizing my health and leading with kindness."
00:31While many people often use resolutions and goals interchangeably, experts say they are
00:35not the same thing.
00:37According to the World Economic Forum, after analyzing over 1,000 individuals who had set
00:42New Year's resolutions, researchers from Stockholm University and Linköping University
00:46in Sweden found that striving towards approach goals was more successful in prompting behavior
00:52change than setting avoidance goals.
00:55The study's authors clarified that an approach goal entails trying to embrace a new habit
01:00or integrate something novel into one's life.
01:03Resolutions centered on refraining from or giving up something, known as avoidance goals,
01:07were deemed to be less successful.
01:09By focusing on specific goals, celebrities like Michelle Visage are able to make tangible
01:14progress and achieve success.
01:17A great example is Tom Holland.
01:19During a 2013 red carpet event, the actor said he'd play Spider-Man, specifically,
01:24Maybe Spider-Man in like 10 years time.
01:26Holland went on to star as Spider-Man in five Marvel movies.
01:30The first was Captain America Civil War in 2016, just three short years after setting
01:35his goal publicly.
01:36According to The Guardian, Holland dedicated himself to preparing for the role of Spider-Man
01:41by honing his acting skills through theatrical performances, notably in Billy Elliot, where
01:45he improved his dancing and acrobatic talents, essential for the superhero's agility.
01:50Holland also demonstrated his enthusiasm for the character by actively seeking out
01:54auditions and impressing casting directors with his physical abilities, such as performing
01:59a backflip during screen tests.
02:01Even former Bachelor's star Madison Pruitt, who's expecting her first child with husband
02:05Grant Trout, recently shared how to set goals that last on her Stay True podcast.
02:10Number three, make sure the vision is realistic.
02:13It's better to start small and actually accomplish it than to set this massive goal or this massive
02:20vision that is near to impossible to accomplish.
