Croatian presidential election: Milanović faces tough battle for second term

The incumbent president, touted as the most popular politician in the Adriatic country, has been widely criticised for his populist views, including his opposition to the EU's support of Ukraine.

00:00Croatia's left-leaning President Zoran Milanovic is running for re-election this weekend against

00:09several candidates, including one backed by the conservative government. Milanovic is

00:14considered the front-runner in Sunday's election. Known as a critique of Western military support,

00:20he spoke out on his views regarding the war in Ukraine.

00:23The bloody war in Ukraine is not a Croatian job. And it won't be a Croatian job. The Croatian

00:29soldiers won't go there.

00:33On the other hand, his main opponent, Dragan Primorak, put forward by the centre-right

00:39HDZ party, has stated that Croatia's place is in the West, not the East.

00:45If no candidate receives more than half of the ballot cast in the first round, a run-off

00:55between the two top will be held on January 12th. Although the Croatian presidency is

01:01seen as mainly ceremonial, the role does carry some political authority and acts as the supreme

01:07commander of the military.
