Jonny Drury and Lewis Cox bring you their take on Albion's defeat to Derby.
Derby went ahead in the first half through Jerry Yates - before a Mason Holgate deflection through his own net made it 2-0.
Grady Diangana gave them a lifeline but they slipped to a defeat.

00:13of a misty Pride Park as Albion's Christmas Nightmare shows no signs of Lenten at the

00:21moment and that was certainly the case here at Derby. Beaten 2-1 in the first game of

00:25the post-Carlos Corberan era. I wouldn't say the football was secondary today but it's

00:32been a busy, busy old few days. A quick turnaround, 36 hours or 48 hours ago, Corberan was still

00:39in charge and it was all rosy but he's out the door. Interim manager's in charge and

00:44Albion just didn't look at the races when they needed to today. Coxey, they tried and

00:50pushed and huffed and puffed at the end but it was too late and for me they probably didn't

00:54deserve anything out of that game. Yeah, no, agreed, agreed on today. Let's be honest,

00:59it wasn't the Christmas Eve, Christmas Day boxing day that myself, yourself or even Chris

01:04Brunt, who I've just spoken with, expected. A nice line from the presser about how Brunt

01:10who was hoping for his usual normal Christmas Day beat up and no doubt a mince pie or two

01:16in hand but no, they were in training, they were travelling here for the first game of

01:21the new era until the new management team come in. Obviously we all know what went down

01:26on Christmas Eve, very late that night. Obviously it was Christmas kind of afternoon, Brunt

01:31who's just obviously gone to court and to be in charge today and for however many days

01:37and games it will be, obviously they've come thick like the fog is here, thick and fast

01:42in the coming days and yeah, I think deservedly beaten today. It was 2-1, look, it was 2-1,

01:50could have been 1-0, perhaps it should have been 1-1. Yeah, it should have been, 100%

01:56Dalot Fairlock scores that goal, it's 1-0 and then a huge mistake at the other end and

02:00then it's game over. Albion were clearly second best in the first half I thought and Brunty

02:04down there, he's sat in on the, obviously he's kind of, for all intents and purposes

02:09leading the caretaker team of Damir Obele, the Spanish coach who remains here and Boaz

02:15Mayer, Brunty's leading that and he spoke post-match and he agreed really about stopping

02:21us, first off, individual errors, he spoke about, you know, square passes being given

02:25away and cut-outs. I mean, he wouldn't put anything on one player or people who made

02:31mistakes or anything, obviously Rakic started in midfield, struggled, didn't he? He wasn't

02:35the only one to struggle, but he had quite a bad first half, replaced at half-time by

02:39Molumbi. Albion improved, they got a foothold and they were better and almost immediately

02:44in the second half they were better, to be honest, and at 1-0, gone the hour, coming

02:49to midway through the second half, came in for a long chance, should have scored, there

02:53had been one or two other moments as well, to be honest. Brunt and the other caretaker

02:59staff readied, readied Iguana, they readied Karl and Grant, it felt like, you know, you

03:03are on top, they're almost like the Cavalry are coming now and then bang. I didn't actually

03:08see the very start of the second goal incident, but I know you did and you said Pagan had

03:13a left-back error and then a sort of ping-pong in the box, isn't it? Bartley makes a block

03:20and then Kayden Jackson's effort, here's Bartley, here's Holgate, goal goes in, you know, it's

03:25not an unfortunate second, is it? Deflections are unfortunate, but don't give it away in

03:28the first place, you know, and at 2-0 there you think, hmm, the game's probably done,

03:33the subs came on, had an impact actually, did Iguana, got the goal back to Iguana, what

03:38was it, nine minutes to go, I think, Crady headed in, his first goal for a long, long

03:42time and there's more than a hint of irony about de Iguana scoring here, I think, after

03:47Carlos Corbijn couldn't get him fit for so, so, so long, but he was bright again, wasn't

03:52he? Like Sunday against Bristol City in Corbijn's last game from the bench, de Iguana was really

03:57bright, probably one of the real high points today and Brunt said he said the same to de

04:01Iguana in there, could have set up Grant for the 2-2 at the depth, couldn't he? And there

04:05were a couple more sort of blocks in the box, it was a bit of chaos at the end, Palmer's

04:10got on for one, hasn't he? But Albin left too much to do, too little, too late and it's

04:16a fruitless evening here and the challenge is getting no easier on the pitch today going

04:21to Sheffield United who, as we're speaking right now, are still leaders, Leeds could

04:25go top tonight after the Blades were actually beaten today by Burnley, so that might not

04:29be good for Albin Sunday, they'll be smarting and looking to respond, getting no easier

04:33on the pitch, obviously the main story at the moment is...

04:37Well yeah, we'll go on to that in terms of, we'll talk more about the game, tomorrow we've

04:42got a podcast coming out, we're going to do a short podcast, we'll do another one next

04:45week because obviously what's happened, so we'll save a bit more game chat for then,

04:48Coxy, what is, just to update on the latest, because we've just been in with Chris Brunt,

04:52you know, he's been asked about it, from what you've read in between the lines, obviously

04:56he doesn't know what's going on, but reading between the lines, it doesn't look like it's

05:00going to be a quick appointment from Albin, they're going to take their time, it's going

05:03to be methodical and it could be two or three games.

05:05Yeah, yeah, yeah, that was that reading, wasn't it, obviously Chris Brunt spoke well there,

05:09he was asked a range of things about tonight, but more, you know, as well about the last

05:14few days, messages he's had from the club, what he expects in the coming days, games,

05:19obviously we know about the period, and a couple of times he's mentioned, look, be there,

05:25help us out for the next few games, now that sounds like a long period, the next few games,

05:31it's not that long, we know obviously Sunday game, there's a Wednesday game, and then there's

05:36a Saturday game, and the way I'm looking into Bruntley's quotes there, it's at least the

05:42next few games, so what's that, why are we on that Thursday, so that's once a game a

05:48week Saturday, and then there's a week for the FA Cup, isn't there, so there's a time

05:53frame, I'd expected that anyway, but it felt like Chris Brunt kind of went along with that

05:57in what he had to say, but truthfully, look, he's, he said, didn't he, he's almost like

06:02sort of like the likes of us and supporters as well, reading things and following stuff

06:07online, obviously, you know, he'll be kept in the loop to an extent, but it won't be

06:11like the ownership, we'll be chatting to him every day and stuff like that, the people

06:15in power, obviously, he did say one or two interesting things about the people in power

06:20and the search post Corfan, a good couple of times he said he has no doubt the application

06:25list will be significant, had some really good things to say about the vacancy here,

06:32the job that's on offer for someone, some really upbeat, positive things, on the back

06:37of the disappointment tonight, because, look, Albion never win it, they just don't win it,

06:41and Derby are strong at home, set piece side, other teams will come up short here this season,

06:48I imagine a lot of those travelling today didn't have too much hope, the history books

06:53say that, but we'll get onto this in the podcast tomorrow, but there's an interesting debate

06:59I think and conversation to be had, I read about it in my comment piece over the Christmas

07:04day or so, Christmas Eve, you know, what kind of job is this next head coach manager taking

07:09on, is it a cracking job, is it a great job, is it a good job, is it an average difficult

07:16job in terms of where Albion are at the moment, under Bill, caught in the Championship, their

07:20aims, their targets are the top 6, I think they're 8th now after today, a couple of points

07:24outside, but the rivals there have games in hand, Bunty was very upbeat, as you would

07:29expect he might be, but he sees it in there, he knows the character's in there, so, yeah,

07:35I mean I still lean towards that being a good job for someone, and hopefully that right

07:38person is not too far around the corner, because an interim period, and nothing against the

07:45caretaker team and the staff taking it on, but to go on for a long time, it's only weeks

07:52if not longer, it's never too healthy, you want the management in as soon as possible

07:59because interim caretaker, it is what it is, it won't last, you know, I don't think any

08:04of us expect Albion to go and win games and games and games, and Chris Brunt's a new manager

08:09like that, it's just not going to happen, I mean I suppose it could, but it's not going

08:13to happen realistically, so the sooner the better, but yeah, we did get the impression

08:18in there that the club won't be doing any sort of rushing this week, early part of next

08:22week, we didn't get that impression, and yeah, be interested to see how it unfolds, obviously

08:26names out there, we've spoken about them, written about them already, there's no shortage

08:30of those out of work, and much to chew over for the likes of Andrew Nesta and Shirlan

08:36Patel, isn't there, and Ian Pearce, Mark Miles, you know, as I wrote, they're learning their

08:42lesson from Corn, because it's a big decision.
