President Lai Oversees Disaster Response Training in New Taipei

Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te has overseen a disaster response training held by one of Taiwan's largest Buddhist organizations. He warned that his country—regularly battered by earthquakes and typhoons—must be prepared for the inevitable.

00:06districts is holding an evacuation exercise. They're practicing how a civil society organization

00:12like this would work together with local government, emergency services and the military to get

00:18residents to safety during a disaster like a typhoon or an earthquake or in the event

00:23of conflict. This disaster response cooperation exercise is being overseen by the country's

00:29President Lai Ching-de.

00:30Our disaster prevention exercise is to be on the alert. We need to be prepared for disasters

00:31before they happen. We need to be more prepared and less likely to have disasters.

00:47Taiwan prides itself on its disaster response and its drills like this that means that Taiwan's

00:53population knows how to spring into action and prevent loss of life when disaster strikes.

00:59Taiwan this year has already been hit by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake and three powerful

01:05typhoons. The message from the country's leader today is that as we move into the next year

01:10Taiwan must remain vigilant.
