Taiwan conducts massive clean-up after deadly Typhoon Kong-rey

Taiwanese are carrying a massive clean-up and offices and financial markets re-opened on Friday (Nov 1) after the powerful Typhoon Kong-rey swept through the island causing two deaths and damaging many buildings and vehicles the day before. 00:00Typhoon Kongrei left a trail of destruction in Taiwan's east coast on Friday, damaging

00:05buildings and vehicles and knocking out power to nearly half a million households.

00:10The Category 4 storm-packing gusts of more than 250 kilometers per hour hit the mountainous

00:16and sparsely populated areas including Taitung, Hualien and Nantou County at 1.40pm on Thursday.

00:23Taiwan's Central Weather Administration said the strong winds and torrential rain had affected

00:28almost all the island.

00:30They said the typhoon's size was the biggest to hit Taiwan since 1996.

00:35Keelung City in northern Taiwan was also battered by the storm.

00:39The guests probably won't be affected by the typhoon because they are afraid of flooding.

00:44Sometimes the water is too big and it will flood the area.

00:47Last time it flooded the area.

00:49The typhoon is coming from the south.

00:51The biggest impact is from Taitung and Hualien.

00:53The impact here is relatively small.

00:57Authorities said the typhoon had wounded more than 500 people and killed two people so far,

01:02with one of them being hit by a falling tree in central Taiwan and another by an electricity pole in Taipei.

01:09The typhoon has forced airport authorities to cancel 527 domestic and international flights.

01:15The typhoon is moving northeast and is expected to bring heavy rainfall in Shanghai and Zhejiang

01:20and Jiangsu provinces in China on Friday.
