Blackpool South MP Chris Webb says a £17m government funding boost for Blackpool Council will help improve residents' lives

00:00The government has announced a 9.1% increase in funding for Blackpool.

00:05In the next financial year, Blackpool Council will receive £17.7 million more

00:10than it did under the Tories for its core settlement.

00:13This represents nearly three times more than the national average

00:17and one of the biggest in the country.

00:19My hometown sent me to Parliament to fight for them and that's what I've been doing

00:23and making sure that Blackpool gets the attention and the resources it needs to thrive.

00:28This investment of nearly £250 million for next year in total

00:32demonstrates that the government has listened.

00:35It represents a huge step forward for our town,

00:37with millions being invested into social care, children's services

00:41and overall spending on local services your family and mine use every day.

00:45For far too long we've faced some of the worst outcomes in the country

00:49but I've said repeatedly we also have the solutions to our own problems.

00:53I've been telling the government that what we lack is the investment to make positive change.

00:58Over the last few months I've brought ministers and senior government officials to Blackpool

01:02including the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister and Secretaries of State

01:06to show them in person the problems we face

01:09and the inspirational work being done by local residents.

01:13The government has paid attention and recognised that investing in Blackpool is the right thing to do.

01:19With this funding boost we can transform lives,

01:21improve our local services and deliver for the people of Blackpool.
