Visiting the Huts

00:00Cape Evans, I think people walk in here and are fascinated by it and have such strong

00:15connections to the Scott story and all of those famous exploits.

00:21You know, roids you walk into and everyone thinks, I could live here, this is nice, you

00:25know, we could light the stove and have a cup of tea.

00:29Discovery, I think when you walk in there you think, how did they survive?

00:36It strikes you that this is a very, very cold and dangerous place and that some of them

00:41didn't make it and the ones who did, many of them were very, very lucky.

00:47Stepping into the huts for the first time is always kind of special.

00:53Looking at all the nooks and crannies and kind of getting a sense of the people that

00:57stayed in these places is always kind of special.

01:01It brings a kind of humanity to the stories.

01:06I was in utter awe when I arrived here.

01:10Even after all the books, documentaries you've seen on the place, it's just, nothing compares

01:18to actually being here.

01:20The size, the scale of it, the magic of it, I think it's one of the only places I've ever

01:26been on earth where the environment, the view, can make you emotional.

01:30It's just so big, so stunning.

01:32Visiting Shackleton's Hut at Cape Rhodes is quite an opportunity and quite an experience.

01:37The setting is not like any I've ever experienced before and being in the hut does connect these

01:45stories in a very real, physical way.

01:49Cape Evans has probably been the jewel in the crown for me so far.

01:53From what we've seen, the setting, Scott's Hut, the icebergs and just the layout of the

01:59sea ice and things at the moment have just been incredible.

02:03The Barn Glacier, Erebus.

02:06Being out here with the team, doing the work, but also kind of sharing the experience together

02:12and learning from the people who've been here before and kind of sharing in the awe of the

02:19newness of it all with the people who haven't.

02:22So between those two things, I think the highlight is the people, historic and present.

02:30And you're utterly blessed to be here, fully, it's just tremendous, amazing.

02:37The really cool thing is when visitors come to the hut now and they see a lot more detail,

02:43a lot more colour and therefore a lot more understanding of the huts and how they were

02:49used and the people who lived here.
