00:00An environmental expert has proposed that evacuation routes be developed and drills

00:06conducted as part of an effort to build flood-resilient communities in Malaysia.

00:11Global Environmental Centre River Care Programme Manager K. Kalidasan said flood drills should

00:16be compulsory at schools, just like fire drills.

00:20Kalidasan also agreed with a recommendation by Japan International Cooperation Agency

00:25to construct high embankments along Malaysia's coastline.

00:29Earlier this month, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who met with his Japanese counterpart Shigeru

00:34Ishiba, agreed to implement a decades-old mitigation project by JICA.

00:39Meanwhile, engineering consultant Adnan Noor said efforts to strengthen the structural

00:44designs of susceptible houses in flood-prone areas should be given priority.

00:49Recently, severe floods struck several states, including Kelantan, Trengganu and Pahang,

00:55leaving seven dead and over 100,000 victims displaced.
