00:00Kayaks, decked with Christmas lights, lit up central Copenhagen as they moved along
00:06the city's canals on Friday evening to celebrate St. Lucia, the traditional bearer of lights.
00:12Spectators watched from streets and bridges around the city, and organizers said around
00:17400 kayaks were part of the parade.
00:19This is a very special event because I think it's a one-of-a-kind event we have here in
00:23Copenhagen.
00:24It's a very beautiful sight to see, 400 kayaks dressed in lights and with the choir singing
00:31beautiful songs all the way around.
00:33And it just gives such a fantastic atmosphere and all the spectators watching it, they're
00:39kind of drawn into the experience and are singing along.
00:43And so what it is in the end, it's for people to experience something magic and hopefully
00:50spread a lot of love.
00:53Copenhagen paddlers wore a traditional Lucia crown of fake candles on their heads, which
00:58is associated with a 3rd century Saints' Day, traditionally celebrated on December 13th
01:04with a procession of singing children.
01:06The procession of lights at one of the darkest times of the year in Scandinavia originated
01:11in Sweden at the end of the 19th century, and was later adapted by their neighbors in
01:15Denmark.
