00:08Iconic items that have a deep meaning and history in the world of sports.

00:14And to tell us the story behind his sports memorabilia collection,

00:18we will be joined live here in the studio by Dr. Michael Rico Messina.

00:34For the knowledge of our viewers, why did you choose to collect sports memorabilia?

00:40Actually, I started with basketball magazines.

00:44I was a kid in the 90s and back then, sports magazines like SWM, Scoreboard were popular.

00:52Then during the pandemic, I decided to evolve my collection.

01:00So from there, I evolved into Philippine Basketball Memorabilia.

01:05Okay, but what was the first thing you collected?

01:09First, it was the magazines.

01:13Were these magazines from the 90s, 80s, or 70s?

01:18So actually, the first magazines I collected were from the 90s.

01:22And from there, I tried to buy from the 80s and 70s.

01:26So I was already backtracking in the history of basketball.

01:29Dr. Michael, for example, if you really want to collect a memorabilia, but it's not available in the Philippines, how do you find it?

01:40Usually, we have friends in other countries who are also looking for possible basketball memorabilia.

01:48Sometimes, they show it to me and when I'm interested, we can send it back to the Philippines.

01:55So we make arrangements to send it back to our country.

02:01I read in the U.S., when it comes to NBA players, sometimes they sign autographs.

02:10So how do you know if you have a memorabilia item?

02:15So in my collection, I have already collected a lot of in-person autographs.

02:22So the player in front of me, or the coach, or the celebrity, they sign the item in front of me.

02:29So now, that will be my basis.

02:31When I see that kind of signature, I compare it to the original signature of the person so I can check if it's really legit.

02:40And there are other evidences, right?

02:42That it really came from an athlete, right?

02:47But anyway, is there another item you want to collect that you had a hard time getting?

02:53Ah, maybe this one, sir.

03:37So this ball was found in a school in Batangas that was supposed to be demolished.

03:55So the schools from different areas of the country would compete to become champions.

04:02So it means that basketball has been in the Philippines for more than 100 years.

04:13The people who played basketball in the Philippines were women.

04:18Because what the Bureau of Education did was assign sports to women and men.

04:27So back then, basketball was just a new sport.

04:31It was just invented by James Naismith.

04:33So now, basketball was initially assigned to women.

04:37But eventually, it also picked up with men.

04:40And now, generally, most men play basketball.
