Macron to name new French prime minister Friday morning

00:00The Elysée has announced that the new Prime Minister will be named this Friday morning,

00:06a name disclosed presumably through a statement.

00:10It was expected for the name to be announced earlier,

00:14but it seems that President Macron needs more time possibly to consult those involved,

00:19possibly to speak one last time with the person he will be naming next Prime Minister of France.

00:26Still two strong contenders.

00:29First, Bernard Cazeneuve, a former Socialist Party member,

00:33especially a former Prime Minister under President Hollande,

00:38and he knows well Emmanuel Macron because Emmanuel Macron was at the time

00:42working with François Hollande, the Socialist President.

00:47Another strong contender is François Bayrou, a centrist figure,

00:51a close ally of President Emmanuel Macron.

00:56He, François Bayrou, was an education minister in the 90s under President Jacques Chirac.

01:06and that would not be a surprise if Emmanuel Macron chose him,

01:11but it would be sending the signal that he wants very much the next government to be a centrist one,

01:17and of course President Macron heads this centrist bloc, or at least it's his allies.

01:22And Clavis, talk us through some of the challenges the next Prime Minister will face.

01:29Well, the challenge is, the problem is for President Macron to find a Prime Minister

01:34who will get some kind of majority at the National Assembly,

01:37because that was what Michel Barnier was facing,

01:42and that's why he suffered that vote of no confidence,

01:46leading to the collapse of the French government.

01:49The next Prime Minister needs to get some kind of majority in order to pass a budget,

01:54to pass any kind of bill.

01:56The problem is, since the last snap elections, no single party holds an outright majority,

02:02and that's why there's a need for coalition building or getting some kind of compromise

02:08and initiate a dialogue between political parties.

02:12It's proving extremely difficult with the far right on the one hand,

02:16that has many MPs in Parliament,

02:19and that has, in a way, the fate of the government in its hands,

02:23unless some coalition is built, notably around the left wing,

02:28which has a lot of MPs,

02:30and that can help keep a government stable,

02:35and also a Prime Minister, of course.
