00:00You've no doubt seen a human skull at some point, and probably one belonging to our hominid
00:08cousins, Neanderthals.
00:10However, another species of ancient human is said to have been discovered in East Asia,
00:15one that lived concurrently with other homo sapiens more than 100,000 years ago.
00:20They have been named the Gelurian species by paleoanthropologists, a word which means
00:24large head people.
00:25These are a collection of skull fragments attributed to the recently described species.
00:30Ones researchers say cannot be attributed to humans, Neanderthals, or Denisovans.
00:34However, the experts say that the features present are somewhat of a mix of traits seen
00:39amongst other species.
00:40That's likely because multiple groups of differing hominid peoples lived in the same area, meaning
00:45this species could have been an ancestor of myriad others.
00:49With the researchers writing about it, it is becoming increasingly clear that in the
00:52Eastern Asian hominid fossils, a greater degree of morphological variation is present
00:57than originally assumed or anticipated.
01:00This is just the latest in a recent boom of discoveries related to new human species,
01:04with experts saying they are revealing just how much more complex human evolution really
01:08is.
