00:02On the continent of Africa in the equatorial forests and savannas lives
00:07one of planet Earth's incredible great apes. And we're here in North America!
00:14It's us, the Krat Brothers. I'm Chris. I'm Martin. We've had so many amazing
00:19adventures with our fellow great apes, the chimpanzees. And to ever since our
00:24very first experiences with them, a few things really stand out about these
00:28creatures. First of all, chimpanzees can really move through the forest.
00:34Remember our adventure in Uganda? Oh yeah, wild chimps in action. They're going, I
00:40think we missed that gathering. It's really tough when they go through this
00:43dense stuff. Going up now. He's fast. Arm over arm. There's no way you can keep up with these
00:51chimps. Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Here comes another one. They are absolutely amazing in the trees. For that weight and that
01:05size, the way they use the sturdy branches to run on, the white branches to bend, even bending these trees
01:11all the way to the ground. And then they're mobile terrestrially. In all our time with chimps, another thing that's
01:17clear is that chimps live in complex societies.
01:20Where communication is key.
01:26Listen to that. That's the classic chimpanzee pan. It's a contact call. Telling all the other chimps, I'm here, where
01:35are you? It's chimp language. Imagine if we could move and climb like a chimpanzee. And communicate like they do.
01:43Imagine if we had chimpanzee powers. What if...
01:55The
01:56On adventure with the coolest creatures. From the oceans to the trees. The brothers crack are going places you never

04:15Chris are you okay yeah I'm okay but ouch oh my ankle you sprained it pretty bad no no I'm
04:25fine see oh

05:34fridge
05:34yeah the creature adventure must go on check it out Jimmy chimps live in complex groups called
05:54communities with anywhere from 30 to over 150 individuals what are those sounds are they
06:02communicating they're social they have all different relationships with each other and they
06:08communicate a lot oh you okay cookie I'm coming but I wish I could climb like Chris whoa you look
06:20like
06:20good mom yeah a chip takes care of her baby for about 10 years
06:28and you're a rascally little girl and pretty vocal too
06:35Gab Gab Gab Gab Gab I'll name you Gabby Gabby great name bro baby chimps love to explore their environment
06:45but they never get too far away from mom ah yes that's what I'm after
06:54okay we found the perfect creature for my plan now get your laser nets ready and split up
07:08literally I mean you go that way and you go that way
07:15see that's why I need a new assistant and I heard these chim pandas are supposed to be so smart
07:22so I need
07:23one as my lab assistant that's right you are being replaced they have opposable thumbs and use tools
07:31supposedly now go catch me one what do they eat they're omnivores eating anything from insects to fruit to leaves
07:44and even meat meat
07:46yeah chimpanzees actually hunt monkeys wow really I like when they eat fruit better
07:54I like when they eat fruit better
07:59the raa call that means danger come on
08:30Zach bots they've got Gabby's mom I'll find out where they're taking her
08:38Let's track the troop.
08:40If we lose them, we may never find them again.
08:58Hey, Gabby. How'd you get in here?
09:06Aw, don't worry. I'll watch out for you until we get you back to your mom and the rest of
09:13the troop.
09:19Oh, you're a good little climber, Gabby. I wish I could climb with you.
09:30But, unfortunately, I can't right now.
09:36What's wrong? That's a distressed face. You're in pain.
09:42Ants! You sat on an ant hill.
09:46I'll get them off.
09:49You're alright. I'm grooming you. You can trust me.
09:54For chimps, grooming is a way of showing friendship.
09:58You know, you're a lot like a human toddler.
10:01Not that surprising, really, because humans and chimps have about 98% of the same DNA.
10:07We're a lot alike, even how we communicate.
10:10We hug, stomp, and laugh.
10:14But you chimps have a whole language of calls and facial expressions, too.
10:20Your happy face. I could make that, too.
10:26We're communicating. Chimp style. Amazing.
10:30You know, you're making me feel a lot better about missing the climbing.
10:46I never knew chimps built nests for the night.
10:49They sure do. They build a new one each night wherever they are, because they're usually on the move.
10:57And it looks like you're doing a pretty good job, too.
11:00Hey, Jimmy. You okay over there?
11:03Ow!
11:05Oh!
11:09At least the troop will stay put for the night so we don't lose them.
11:12We still have to reunite Gabby's mom with them if we can rescue her from Zack.
11:17I'm gonna turn in.
11:20Okay. I'm staying up to do a little chimp power suit programming.
11:23I have a feeling we might need some chimp power before this adventure is over.
11:28Right, Koki?
11:31Come on. I want to teach you a special chimp skill.
11:35Tool use. Few animals can figure out how to use objects as tools.
11:40But chimps are so intelligent that you do it in the wild.
11:47Now you can get revenge on those ants, Gabby.
11:50Not sure if your mom taught you this yet, but chimps actually use a tool to eat ants.
11:56The stick.
11:57This is your tool to get the ants without getting bitten.
12:01Here's what you do. You put the stick into the ant hill.
12:05The ants attack and bite the stick, thinking it's an intruder.
12:09After a little bit, you take the stick out.
12:12Voila! An ant popsicle.
12:19That's right. You knew what to do next. Tasty, right?
12:26You gotta swallow the ants fast, though, so they don't bite your throat on the way down.
12:31Now that's a chimp happy face.
12:36Hey, do you know about sign language?
12:38It's a way of communicating by making signs with your hands.
12:42A way to communicate when someone is deaf or hard of hearing.
12:46Hang on.
12:48Hello.
12:49Hello.
12:49See? My friend Leia just said hello, using sign language.
12:54Hello.
12:56That chimp is cute.
12:59She just signed. You're really cute.
13:01How do you sign this?
13:05Stick.
13:07Ah, okay.
13:09This is stick.
13:16Stick.
13:17You try.
13:20Yes.
13:21That's it. You got it.
13:23Stick.
13:25Thanks, Leia. Bye.
13:28Bye.
13:30This is great.
13:32You know our sign language for stick, and I know your facial language for happy.
13:38We're communicating.
13:41Yeah, I'm happy too.
13:49Martin, you're back.
13:52I've been tracking Zack all night.
13:53I found his camp, but we need a strategy to pull off this rescue.
13:58Rescue? Did someone say rescue?
14:05No way. A chip disk?
14:08Amazing.
14:09Chimpanzee power.
14:11This could be the answer.
14:13Insert chimpanzee power disk.
14:16Touch chimpanzee.
14:19And activate chimpanzee power.
14:37Chimpanzee power.
14:39Wow.
14:40I feel so strong and athletic.
14:44Oh, I can climb so well now.
14:48I feel kind of like Chris.
14:51Now I know why Chris, woohoo, likes climbing so much.
14:56Okay, Martin, enough climbing.
14:58You gotta use those powers to rescue that mother chimp.
15:01We'll stay with the troop until you get her back.
15:04Right, I'll be back soon.
15:06Oh, it's great to be a great ape.
15:11Yes, very good.
15:14With my mind control helmet attached, she does whatever I want.
15:19And see, the chimp doesn't make any mistakes.
15:23Her intelligence is superior.
15:27To you, not me, I'm still the smartest.
15:33Okay, a chimp is one and a half times stronger than an adult human.
15:38So I'll use my chimp strength in this rescue.
15:43Okay, Zack.
15:44That chimp is not gonna be your assistant anymore.
15:48Nice outfit.
15:49But it's no match for my Zack bots.
15:52Damn!
16:03You're forgetting about chimp strength, Zack.
16:05Chimps have more fast twitch muscles than a human.
16:08And that muscle is the kind best for strength.
16:15Humans have more slow twitch muscles which are best for endurance.
16:20Whoa!
16:22That's chip strength for ya.
16:35Uh-oh.
16:37Get him!
16:43Oh, where are those fast twitch muscles now?
16:47Zack!
16:48Let me go!
16:49And the chimpanzee too!
16:51She's a mom!
16:52She needs to get back to her baby now!
16:55Chris can't look after little Gabby forever!
16:58A baby chip?
17:00Interesting.
17:01Well, I could use a little more assistance around here.
17:06Zack, don't even think about it.
17:08Too late!
17:09I already did!
17:10Zack bots!
17:12Let's go get that chip!
17:14Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
17:18Oh-oh, you don't think I can catch you?
17:21Ah, you rascal!
17:23Here I come!
17:30Hey!
17:31Hey, no fair!
17:32That's my remote!
17:35Okay, so scientists have shown that chimps have some capacity to learn human sign language.
17:41But I know some chimp-style gestures that you use!
17:46Come here!
17:47Come on, I know you understand!
17:50It's how chimps say, come here!
17:52With their hand out, like this!
17:57Thank you!
17:59Well, there's that happy face again!
18:03Oh, I'll give you something to laugh about!
18:13That call must mean, let's stop for a snack!
18:16You don't have to tell me twice!
18:19Ah!
18:19Ah!
18:20I can't quite reach!
18:23It's cool that one of these chimps found this fruiting tree and called everyone else over!
18:27I know!
18:29I never knew that chimps had so many calls and gestures for communicating!
18:35They have over 100 different calls, gestures, and facial expressions that scientists know!
18:40They even have ways of referring to each individual with different sounds!
18:44Hey Jimmy!
18:45If you want her to share, try putting out your hand like this!
18:53Thanks!
18:54That's the human way of saying I appreciate you!
18:59Delicious!
19:02Shh!
19:03Don't say anything!
19:04But I've been captured!
19:06By Zack!
19:07We're on our way to the Tortuga!
19:10And...
19:11I am!
19:12Uh-oh!
19:13This is not good!
19:14Little Gabby is there with Chris!
19:16And Chris is still injured!
19:18We have to figure out how to help them!
19:20Fast!
19:26And...
19:27Ape Assistant stop!
19:29Now, I'm gonna leave my assistant here outside while I go in to collect a little one!
19:35You!
19:36Follow me!
19:39Oh, hello! I'm here for that.
19:48No way, Zack. She's gonna be picked up by her troop. And her mom, not you.
19:53Yeah, what are you gonna do about it? Hand her over!
19:57No! Gabby, run!
20:01Get back here!
20:06Hey! That's mine!
20:14Give me that back!
20:17I said give me that!
20:20Don't make me come up there!
20:24Well, that's no way to talk to a chimp.
20:27But I know chimp language. The chimp gesture for come here.
20:34Come here.
20:36I said give me that!
20:41Ah!
20:42Ow!
20:44Thanks! You understood!
20:46No!
20:48Sorry, Zack. We're great apes who know how to communicate with each other.
20:52And Gabby's mom will not be your assistant anymore.
20:59Yes! You're free!
21:03Touch chimpanzee and reactivate!
21:09Woo! To the Gabby rescue!
21:14Hey, Zack!
21:16Huh? Get them!
21:27That's chimpanzee power!
21:33Great!
21:36Agility!
21:39And intelligence!
21:48Well, that's a new twist on the ape assistant!
21:54You really know how to make an exit, Zack!
21:57You can have your chimp! They're not good assistants anyway!
22:04Can you make sure Zack gets home safely, Aviva?
22:08I'd be glad to.
22:10There. He'll dance right back to camp.
22:16Aw, Gabby and her mom together again.
22:20And you brought the troop back too!
22:24Uh, but where's Jimmy?
22:26He made some friends.
22:28Here. Try this one.
22:31It's really ripe.
22:38Well, that's creature mission accomplished!
22:40We climbed with one of the greatest climbers in the world.
22:43The Great Chimpanzees.
22:46I'll never climb that well again.
22:48I'm glad you got to do it, bro.
22:50Sorry you didn't get to climb this time, Chris.
22:53It's okay.
22:54Gabby helped me make the best out of a bad situation.
22:58I got to see another side of chimps
23:00that I wouldn't have seen if I was climbing around.
23:03And that was pretty special.
23:06Bye!
23:10Even though we're a lot alike,
23:12chimpanzees have their own language and way of life.
23:16And now the troop is together again.
23:18And back where they belong.
23:20In their forest home.
23:24Living free and in the wild.
23:26Hey, wait for me!
23:28Martin, the adventure is over!
23:31Hey, I'm gonna keep living the chip life for a while.
23:34I always knew he'd go ape one of these days.
23:41So chimpanzees are incredibly athletic and social with many ways of communicating with one another.
23:48A few more things that have always struck us about chimpanzees.
23:52Intelligence.
23:53And I remember one of the first times we witnessed this so clearly.
24:00It was at a chimpanzee rescue center in Africa.
24:04Places like this allow orphan chimps to grow up in a safe environment.
24:09Here we had the chance to spend some time helping young chimps learn important chimps skills.
24:14Like using tools.
24:16When I taught them how to use a rock to get a sweet treat, you could see the intelligence at
24:21work.
24:22Try.
24:23Ready?
24:24Get in.
24:25Perfect!
24:27Excellent job!
24:30This is an important part of the culture in some chimpanzee communities.
24:35Learning how to crack open these palm knives and get to the juicy flesh inside.
24:41This takes smarts.
24:44This takes the ability to imitate and to learn.
24:49No doubt chimps are very smart creatures, but that's not all.
24:53When you spend time with them, it's clear that each chimp has a unique,
24:57one-of-a-kind personality.
25:00Just like us!
25:02Let's go, let's go!
25:04What are you doing?
25:07We noticed some chimps were gentle and some were pretty rambunctious.
25:12Don't take the microphone to cover!
25:15The microphone cover!
25:16Oh!
25:18Who took it?
25:18Who took my bike?
25:20Whoa!
25:22These chimps all have their own personality.
25:24Some like to fling right into your face or the mischievous and like to take your microphone foam.
25:30Others just like to hang out with a friend.
25:32Nice, calm and peaceful.
25:34Is Chris giving you a good piggyback ride?
25:36Huh? Is he?
25:37Yeah!
25:40Let's go explore!
25:42We hope we can all keep getting to know and learn more about our fellow great ape, the chimpanzees!
25:49Keep on creature adventuring!
25:50We'll see you on the creature trail!
