The death toll from a landslide triggered by heavy rain in eastern Uganda has climbed to 17, a government spokesman said on Friday (Nov 29), with more than 100 others missing.

00:00The death toll from a landslide triggered by heavy rain in eastern Uganda has risen
00:08to 17, with more than 100 people still missing, a government spokesperson announced on Friday.
00:15The landslide struck on Wednesday in Bulambuli district, about 300 kilometers east of Kampala,
00:21burying dozens of homes across several villages.
00:25Charles Odonto, spokesman for the Office of the Prime Minister, which oversees disaster
00:30response efforts, expressed shock at the high death toll despite early warnings issued to
00:35residents in high-risk areas.
00:38The government had advised those in landslide-prone regions to relocate ahead of the seasonal
00:43rains.
00:44According to the Uganda Red Cross Society, at least 45 households were completely buried,
00:49with many others partially damaged.
00:52Search and rescue operations, led by the Red Cross and police, are ongoing.
00:57Since October, Uganda has experienced unusually heavy rainfall, leading to widespread flooding
01:03and landslides.
01:05On Tuesday, torrential rains caused the River Nile to burst its banks, flooding a major
01:10highway connecting Kampala to the northwest, according to the Uganda National Roads Authority
01:16and police.
