Smiths legend honoured with mural

Andy Rourke, formerly of the Smiths, has been honoured by a mural on the side of a pub in the Northern Quarter. Here is why:

00:00A new mural has been unveiled in Manchester, paying tribute to a Manchester music legend

00:04and raising awareness for pancreatic cancer.

00:05The mural of Andy Rourke is now adorning the side of the Wheatsheaf pub and will be a permanent

00:10fixture there after a startling £30,000 was raised by the public in a fundraiser started

00:14by Mike Joyce.

00:15Rourke died in May last year following a battle with pancreatic cancer and the amazing thing

00:18about this tribute is that it allows the people of Manchester to properly recognise and remember

00:22one of the most impressive and well-loved musicians of the last 50 years, as well as

00:26hopefully being able to raise awareness and more funding for those facing a similar battle.

00:30The mural itself was done by Axe P19, a world-renowned screen artist, based on a photo taken from

00:35the work of Nalanay Dhanrong who was the tour photographer for the Smiths in 1985 and 1986.

00:41Credit has to be given to Mike Joyce for bringing this to life, it's an incredible testament

00:44to how much of a difference friendship can make to everyone and the passion and dedication

00:48with which he's pursued this is truly admirable, with the impact of that £30,000 being potentially

00:53life-changing for many.
