Beefed-up hate laws won't touch religious free pass

Religious exceptions to anti-vilification laws will be guaranteed as protected groups are expanded and criminal offences created to stamp out deepening hate and division.

00:00The right to be safe from hate is something that we must all cut, incredibly have, to defend

00:06and protect. And that is why today we're introducing Victoria's Anti-Vilification

00:11and Social Cohesion Bill to the Victoria Parliament. It's a bill that will keep

00:16Victorians safe, a bill that will keep Victoria united. Today is a great day for all Victorians.

00:25It doesn't matter whether you wear a kippah or a hijab. If someone vilifies you,

00:31if someone wants to go after you, your faith, your background, your belief, your sexuality,

00:39the chances are that they will be charged and go to jail or heavily fined.

00:45I must stress this is not about mildly effective conduct. This is not about being upset about what

00:52someone said. This is about protecting from serious harm that are serious, both to individuals

00:57and the community.
